'Critical Questions: Epistemologies, Ethics, and Methods in Research on the Global South', Guest Lecture for the University of Calgary (Invited by Dr. Meaghan Edwards, Fall 2023)

Educational Opportunity & Access in Brazil

Throughout my time living in Brazil, I had the privilege of working with students from varied backgrounds with diverse interests and goals for the future. I worked hard to support them in achieving their academic goals, whether this be at the secondary or post-secondary level. In this, I have offered a mixture of remunerated and for-free tutoring in both English and IB History, as well as university admissions guidance to past-students, colleagues and private clients. I built long-standing relationships with both professionals and students during my time in Brazil, providing support and guidance with some regularity, particularly regarding language, international academic exchange programmes, and studying for a degree abroad. 

As a result of building this rapport, I was invited to present a guest lecture at the Universidade da Região de Joinville (UNIVILLE) in May, 2022. The lecture covered topics such as my early life; my journey to a BA, MA and now, a PhD; a comparative discussion on the UK and Brazilian systems of education; and the pedagogical principles behind my teaching praxis. It was followed by a short question and answer session. Students from the education programme translated my talk into Portuguese in real time. 

I remain in-touch with several of the audience members to this day and am very proud of their achievements.
